Gifts to the Foundation
Since 1934, the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation has taken as its primary mission the inspiring of young people to lead lives of integrity, characterized by service above self and service to the community. The Foundation has sought to accomplish this goal in two ways: 1) through awarding scholarships to deserving college students and 2) through presenting awards to graduating college seniors who have distinguished themselves in service to others and service to the community.
Currently the Sullivan Foundation distributes annually approximately $1,000,000 to 30 small private colleges located in the Appalachian region of the southeastern United States. These grants are for financial aid, awarded annually in keeping with each college’s rules and procedures for making such awards. At the 30 collegiate institutions, the Foundation has also established endowments for support of the scholarship programs. Since the relationships with some of these institutions extend back many years, the Sullivan Foundation is frequently viewed as the primary patron in terms of total gifts over time.
From time to time the Sullivan Foundation receives gifts and bequests from individuals and entities that believe in the mission of the Foundation and wish to effect their own charitable giving through utilizing the mechanisms established over many years by the Foundation. Such gifts and bequests may be made to the Sullivan Foundation in a variety of ways. A planned gift to the Sullivan Foundation may be either (1) "outright" (for the Foundation's immediate use) of cash, life insurance, property, or annuities, or (2) "deferred" (arranged now for completion at a future time), such as a remainder trust or a bequest made in a Will.
If you are interested in the Sullivan Foundation and share in its mission to assist deserving college students, please consider an unrestricted gift to the Foundation. Please contact the President of the Foundation or any of its Board Members for more information. The Sullivan Foundation will be glad to assist in any manner possible in facilitating the gift.
