The Sullivan Foundation, in partnership with the University of Mississippi, is sponsoring a summer college course and internship in Costa Rica for the summer of 2012. The course will receive three hours of credit in liberal arts, and involve 2 weeks of course study on social entrepreneurship concepts and principles, and 6 weeks of supervised internships, all within the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. The tentative times scheduled for the trip is mid-June thru mid-August, 2012.
The Summer Institute is a for-credit intensive study of social entrepreneurship that explores in the issues and processes for a successful launch of a social venture. The course class is taught during a short summer session and is coupled with an intensive and supervised internship that incorporates hands-on learning with social entrepreneurship projects. Through the course, students will create social change projects that make an impact on an organization. Students must satisfactorily complete the Summer Institute to continue with the internship and earn the distinction of becoming a Sullivan Fellow.
The course helps students understand business and social entrepreneurship principles which include discovering how to cultivate individual entrepreneurial skills, understanding the role of social businesses in contributing to the local, regional and national economy, identifying and seizing new social entrepreneurial opportunities, learning the components of starting a business or nonprofit organization and ultimately, thinking and acting entrepreneurially regardless of the students’ chosen career path.
